Ah the classic paperboy, adorable, street-smart, and often down on their luck, homeless, and looking to make a quick buck for food and drink, mostly drink.

Feeling an odd sense of kinship Shyre ruffles the young orc's cap drops 10 gold in is hand and makes her way towards the bar.

    "Laissez les bons tem--"

Carlos sees the amount of gold you drop in to his hand, and faints.

As you approach, you bump in Fallek dragging a couple of guardsman out of the bar. He nods at you two, and you overhear him scolding the guards, "Alright, you know better. Lord Drysdale doesn't want any of his boys in the tavern for fear of overindulging, and I have no choice but to kick you out. Your "noble kind" took over how we run things in this town, least you can do is follow your own rules; so no, I will not have any goddamn pity."

Inside the bar is absolutely pleasant. Ceiling fans help alleviate the god-awful humidity, and the jolly atmosphere raises your spirits. An older-than-time-itself orc lady sees you enter, and comes over. "My oh my, new faces! Where y'at? Now now, come on in, can I get you a table in the main hall, or a slightly more private booth?"

"We'll take a table, thank you very much."

Another streetwise to see if we can spot anyone who seems like the might have more info on where The Brothers are actually hiding out.

    You rolled a 19!

"Mah name is Mother Aran, by the way, but you all can call me Gran if you want."

She grabs a bowl of tortilla chips and a couple glasses of water, and sets it at the table she leads you to. "Those chips are on the house, my specialty. Now you let ol' Gran know if I can get you anything else, you understand? We got the best gumbo, beer, cornbread, fish, sandwiches, ho' boy just about anything you can think of. There is a menu right beside you too if you want to take a lil' browse. An' if you like them chips, we even got this here specialty of mine I call Zug-Zug Paste, a popular salty dip made from the zug-zug fruit; The fruit kinda looks like me: green, bumpy, and sorta strange. Laissez les bons temps rouler!"

You begin asking around about the Brothers Gray, but you seem to get the same rumors all over; Lead by halflings brothers, hiding out in the Chaos Scar somewhere, crazy. However.. your street-smarts cause you to notice a human man sitting at a booth alone. He seems to be purposely dodging your gaze.  He knows something.

Troy eyes the chairs surrounding the table, shrugs, and eases into one. He bumps his knees on the table and nearly sends everything on top of it flying. He scowls.

He picks up the menu and scans it before waving at Gran to get her attention.

"Two blackened chicken sandwiches, one chicken & sausage gumbo, and an order of mini tacos. And an ale."

Now don't you worry, ol' Gran not gonna discriminate. Especially for a fine young thing like yourself. How about you just cover two of the entrees for, say, 1g, and I'll give you the extra sandwich, appetizer an' ale for free. Sound like a deal?" She wanders back to the kitchen to prepare your food.

Troy watches Gran as she heads back into the kitchen before turning his attention to Shyre and her new friend. He moves his chair into a position that allows him to keep an eye on them and intervene if necessary. He grabs a handful of chips out of the bowl and munches. Tastes like home.

Shyre suddenly leans uncomfortably close to this frightened stranger.

"Trouble, you say? Oh I know all about trouble, you might say I'm an expert on the subject."

She smiles and suddenly her teeth seem much sharper then before and the nails that are tapping a rhythmic tattoo on the table feel closer to claws.

"However, trouble isn't even up for discussion just yet. Right now we are here to discuss mutual benefit. I benefit by learning what you know about the Brothers Gray, and you benefit by me going away, and leaving you to wallow you in, significantly more, ale."

Shyre politely motions to Gran for two more pitchers of ale.

"However, if you like, we could put trouble back on the table."

    You rolled a 13!

    "Look lady I, I don't.. What I mean is..."

The man sighs, and looks down at his drink. You notice he is dirty and visibly scarred; a strange design carved in to his own skin around his eye.

"I used to run with a small group of bandits out in the wilds of the Scar. That was, until those sodding halflings showed up. Three brothers, three fucking psychopaths that persuaded my friends that they had power and skill. The brothers were faily level headed at first.. but as the weeks passed, something was changing. They started getting more deranged, insisting on obsessively sculpting stone statues of all their victims.. past, present, and future."

"Do you have a map of the scar? .. Take mine. I won't be needing it. The brothers hide out here now, at an abandoned mine."

He pulls out a map, marks it, and hands it to you.

"If you plan on hunting them down.. tell them Zane sent you before you drive a dagger straight in to their twisted spines."

Back at your table Mother Aran carries a heavy platter of food to your table. She overhears the conversation with Shyre. "My, you two are heading in to the Scar..? Restwell needs strong young people like yerself, it does. Every day that passes, it feels like this ol' city gets quieter and quieter, while the valley gets more and more dangerous... I hope you stay safe out there. Or Ol' Gran is gonna have to go in to the Scar herself to drag you back out of it."

At this point, anyone not in the bar will still have to check in with the guard at the front gate (name, profession, business) before joining the group.

Otherwise, your party has all the information needed to hunt down The Brothers Gray, giving you the option to begin heading your way towards the Old Mill, or continue exploring the small city.

Refer to the Roll20 map to look at both the Chaos Scar and Restwell maps, and just use the pen tool to show what destinations you would like to reach. For the Chaos Scar map, the ruler tool does show an accurate representation of distance. For the Chaos Scar map, do make note of the direction and path you take; each icon marked by a "cave" is actually another adventure, and I will make take in to account situations you may find yourself accidentally involved should that adventure call for it. (For example, if an adventure you cross over starts by being ambushed by goblins.. well. You see what I mean.)

Lastly, I do believe the map's numbers give a rough estimate of the level of the quest there.. (1A seems to be level 1, 2A seems to be level 2, etc). Mostly assume the deeper you go in to the Chaos Scar, the more dangerous it is.

Post  Etheyl Woodwell Sun Oct 27, 2013 12:43 am

Well, it seemed like it was time to meet up with her group. In fact, she was probably late...

"My name is Etheyl Woodwell," she answers in reply to the guard's typical prompt. "I...am either an acrobat or adventurer, depending on what the day calls for. This is my husband, Crumnley." The stern man with a big, grey mustache, nods briefly and shifts the weight of a duffle bag carried on his shoulder. They had decided that Etheyl would do the talking until they got settled under the hope that it would keep attentions from lingering on Crumnley for longer than necessary.

Etheyl's friendly grin takes on a withdrawn quality for a moment. "We're here to meet up with some friends that should have already come through. A big Goliath should have been part of the group, he might have stood out the most. We've all got a mutual investment in tracking down some bandits we've traced to this area. Still gathering more information, but that's what we've got to work with."

Knowing the drill, she fishes out her adventurer's card and hands it over. It was a bit dog-eared, but she'd kept the same one for years now. Even now it made her smirk seeing all the different group names cluttering up the card. Some were crossed out and rewritten, and a few were smudged nearly to the point of being illegible, but she had made sure everything was left on the card. Which...probably made this poor guard's job difficult.

"Wow, you have really seen a lot of the world, haven't you? Guardsman Redgrave hands back the the cards and smiles back, "Thank you Mr. and Mrs. ... Woodwell. The rest of your, uh, Flour Titties should be about in the city. I recommend checking The Stumbling Giant tavern, it is where most people in he city head first."

The two of you cross the bridge (escorted by guards), and run in to Corporal Fallek and Syradon. Syradon smiles and nods silently as he takes Etheyl's weapons, but Fallek watches her husband with a careful eye. "I don't remember getting word of your profession, Mr. Woodwell. What's in the bag?"

"My apologies, sir. I am a merchant, and these are my goods. I don't think you'll want to open it though, the goods I carry are exotic and.. somewhat foul. Quite valuable, though." Crumnley responds, smiling politely.

"That so. Listen, I hate my time being wasted. Open the bag."

"If you insist," Crumnley grumbles. He opens the bag, revealing over fifty jars filled with a substance that looks and smells like spoiled milk. "What you see before you is the milk of a Kank, an insect like creature who's lactation by-products are than mixed with various herbs and spices. This beverage is sought after by vari--

"Oh dear lord, stop." Both Fallek and Syradon look utterly disgusted. "Just go on ahead."

"My deepest apologies, sir." Crumnley bows. "No, no it's fine, just please get the stuff away from me. I wish I never asked." Crumnley grins at Etheyl, and the two of you head for the Stumbling Giant tavern. The two Woodwells find the rest of the party within the bar, and join you two at the table. Crumnley rests his heavy dufflebag at his feet, and waves over Mother Aran. His voice is slightly more gravely than when he was talking to the official, and slightly more gruff. You get the sense this is him when he is more relaxed. Ironically, he appears a bit grumpier when he is like this. When the old orc woman approaches, however, you notice an absolute genuine respect and kindness towards her.

"Hello love, could I make an order for my wife and I? We will split some of these fried zucchinis, I'll take some jumbalaya, and she'll have the po' boy and a margarita. If you have it, could you bring me a glass of whiskey? Much appreciated." He places three gold pieces in her hands, nodding for her to keep the change. Etheyl notices his accent coming back in already. After their orders reach the table, Crumnley turns his attention to the maps, and the information Shyre and Testosterone have gathered.

"Hmph. So it seems that this mine is where we will find them, huh. I see two options than..."

"We can either approach by night, which could help us avoid any unwanted ambushes, but we could also be hindered by the lack of visibility. Or..."

"We can approach by day, which could put us at a greater risk of ambush, but at least we will have an easier time seeing."

    "So, what say you?"

    I HAD TO.

From behind his pile of food, Troy nods at Crumnley as the couple approach the table and take their seats. He quietly mulls over the options Crumnley presented them and takes another bite.

"Considering we do not know how many are in this little gang, it might be best if they are as unprepared for us as possible. Besides, the night is not difficult to overcome."

He sticks his hand out over the center of the table and a small globe of energy appears above it, radiating soft light. Having given his two coppers, he closes his massive fist and the light winks out. He anxiously shifts in his chair, he's ready to get vengeance for his comrade and go back home.

Troy takes the map from Crumnley and spreads it out in front of him. He examines all its details and landmarks for several minutes before tracing a finger over the path he wagers would be the best.

He places four gold pieces on the table, enough to cover their tab and something extra for Gran.

As the four of you are leaving town, Fallek returns your weaponry at the keep's gate. You notice that it seems that all of your gear had been polished and sharpened, with a small note attached that reads; "I hope to hear about all of your adventures! -Syradon"

The valley before you is long and scarred, filled with bogs and caves formed by shards of falling meteorite. On the far end of the Chaos Scar, you can see what you have only about in rumors; a perpetual lightning storm surrounding a fortress built in to the jagged rock wall that was formed by the impact of the meteor. You dwell on it for a moment before continuing your trek through the swamp.

After about 10 minutes of trudging through mud and murky waters, you spot an array of colored lights coming from a cave, like none you have ever seen before. Do you choose to explore it?

At last, your party spots the abandoned mine resting beneath the dim moonlight, as well as signs of a lit campfire. Little over a hundred feet out from the mine, Crumnley has any torches or other light sources extinguished. He squints, carefully scanning the mine.Alright. From what I can gather, I can see.. three men around that campfire. We can approach the mine from.. there, there.. or there." Crumnley points at the multiple locations indicated by dim light on the map.

Where would you like to start? Any edge of the map that is lit up is a potential start point for this encounter.
